OSU vs. Michigan Game Highlights 2002 (home) OSU 14 UM 9: Ohio State Safety Will Allen intercepted a John Navarre pass at the goal line on the final play of the game to beat the Wolverines. The victory clinched a spot in the Fiesta Bowl to play for the national championship. Michigan dominated the time of possession with almost 35 minutes to OSU's 25, but the Bucks played well enough to record one of the biggest wins in school history. 2001 (away) OSU 26 UM 20: TB Jonathan Wells ran for three first half TDs, while OSU built a 23-0 lead at halftime. Wells sat out almost all of the 2nd half with an injury, but still rushed for 129 yards on 25 carries. It was Ohio State's first win at UM since 1987. It was QB Craig Krenzel's first collegiate start, filling in for the suspended Steve Bellisari. 2000 (home) Michigan 38 OSU 26: Ohio State, down big at home, 31-12, rallied to within five points at 31-26. The Bucks had the ball deep in their own territory late in the 4th quarter, but turned it over on downs to the Wolves. After that, UM QB Drew Henson clinched the victory with a TD on a short run. 1999 (away) Michigan 24 OSU 17: The Bucks, up 17-10 in the 3rd quarter and looking to add to that lead after TB Jonathan Wells ran 76 yards to the UM six, let this one slip away with too many mistakes. Not getting into the end zone after Wells' long run, and the missed FG after that, started the slide, as the Wolverines rallied for the victory in the "Big House". 1998 (home) OSU 31 Michigan 16: It was an offensive explosion for OSU in this contest, as WR David Boston caught 10 passes for 217 yards and two TDs (30 and 43 yards). QB Joe Germaine passed for 330 yards and three touchdowns and TB Michael Wiley ran for 120 yards on 12 carries and one score (a 53 yard jaunt less than two minutes into the game). The Bucks had 462 yards of total offense. UM QB Tom Brady threw for 375 yards in the loss. |
| The John Cooper Era (1988 - Present) at OSU has been a roller coaster ride, highlighted by great games and even greater players, but the biggest disappointment has been the inability to beat Michigan. One win is all he has to show for his efforts. Here's hoping he can turn it around, because he deserves it. He has toughed it out in one of the most difficult places to coach in the game today. The man deserves a lot of credit. Below, you'll find 10 years of OSU vs. Michigan history. We're about due for a big win in this rivalry! |
| 1987: (At Ann Arbor) OSU 23 - 20. The Buckeyes played this game on pure emotion, as head coach Earle Bruce was fired the previous Monday stunning the entire nation of college football fans. He was allowed to coach this one last game. PK, Matt Frantz kicked a 26 yard FG with 5:18 left in the game, making up for his late game miss in 1986. |
| 1988: (At Columbus) Michigan 34 - 31. Down to 20 - 0 at half-time, Ohio State rallied to take a 31 - 27 lead with 2:02 remaining. Then Michigan WR/KR John Kolesar accounted for the full 100 yards by returning the kickoff 59 yards to the 41 yard line, and catching the game-winning TD on a heave from scrambling QB, Demetrius Brown. |
| 1989: (At Ann Arbor) Michigan 28 - 18. This one was a tight one and wasn't decided until Jarrod Bunch ran 23 yards for a TD with only 1:20 left in the game to clinch the victory. Scottie Graham, normally a FB, filled in as TB for injured star, Carlos Snow, and ran for 133 yards and two TD's. The Buckeyes moved the ball well with 420 yards of total offense. |
| 1990: (At Columbus) Michigan 16 - 13. The Wolverines won on a last second 37 yard field goal by J.D. Carlson. UM Took possession after OSU QB Greg Frey was stopped on a fourth and inches option play at the Ohio State 29 yard line, putting Michigan in position to get some yards, then kick the game-winning field goal. |
| 1991: (At Ann Arbor) Michigan 31 - 3. This was a blowout from the start, as WR/KR Desmond Howard returned a punt 93 yards for a TD, then struck the Heisman pose in the end zone. At the time, he was the leader to win the award, which he later won. This TD all but sealed it for him. |
| 1992: (At Columbus) 13 - 13 tie. WR, Greg Beatty, caught a fourth down four yard TD pass from QB Kirk Herbstreit late in the fourth quarter to tie it up and help save OSU from another disappointing loss to the hated Wolverines. The Bucks won by not losing, thus allowing Cooper to keep his job. The whole coaching staff was rumored to be gone if there was another loss to "That Team Up North." A tie saved their jobs! |
| 1993: (At Ann Arbor) Michigan 28 - 0. The undefeated, highly ranked Buckeyes would have went to the Rose Bowl if they beat the Maize and Blue. Ohio State was pounded. Platooning QB's, Bob Hoying and Brett Powers, struggled the whole game, as this was the first Michigan game for both and it was in the "Big House." |
| 1994: (At Columbus) Ohio State 22 - 6. Defense dominated this game for OSU. A two-yard TD run by TB Eddie George after a Luke Fickell interception sealed the victory. It was the first win for the Bucks in the series since 1987. |
| 1995: (At Ann Arbor) Michigan 31 - 23. Not many fans on both sides will ever forget this one. Ohio State entered the game undefeated and ranked #2 in the country, only to have the Wolverines spoil their Rose Bowl and national championship hopes. UM tailback, Tim Biakabutuka ran for 313 yards. |
| 1996: (At Columbus) Michigan 13 - 9. Leading 9 - 0 at half-time, OSU fell apart in the second half on both sides of the ball. The highlight of the game was a 69 yard TD pass from QB Brian Griese to WR Tai Streets on the second play of the second half when Buckeye cornerback, Shawn Springs, fell down. |
| 1997: (At Michigan 20 - 14).
Another year, another close, disappointing defeat for
Ohio State. The Buckeyes didn't go down without a fight though.
This was an exciting game that wasn't decided until the Wolverines
stopped OSU on 4th down deep into Buckeye territory with under
a minute to play. The star of the game was -- who else? -- Charles Woodson. You know he was determined to put on a show, since OSU WR David Boston was "trash" talking about him to the press prior to the game and well into the game. Michigan's last TD came on CB Andre Weathers' 43 yard INT return of a Stanley Jackson pass that put UM up 20-0. The Wolverines couldn't put anymore points on the board after that, but it was just enough to come away with a hard-fought victory. |
