Ohio State (9-1, 5-1) 31 - Minnesota (2-8, 0-6) 3

Backup QB Joe Germaine threw for 211 yards (on 17-21-0) and three TD's. Backup OLB Diggs had three sacks to lead OSU to an Easy 31-3 victory over Minnesota in the Metrodome. It was a game that OSU put into "cruise control" after TE John Lumpkin scored a TD on a 25-yard pass from Germaine with 32 seconds left before halftime to increase the lead to 24-3.

WR David Boston caught eight passes for 94 yards and two TD's on passes of six and four yards from Germaine. The Buckeye Defense registered seven sacks for the game and held the Golden Gophers to 157 yards on total offense. They also had two INT's and two fumble recoveries. FS Gary Berry had one each with the INT being his fifth of the season for an outstanding two game stretch of excellent play.

Ohio State entered the game first in the nation in pass efficiency defense. They continued their stingy pace by holding Minnesota to 106 yards passing on 10-27-2 INT's and six first downs for the game, including only two in the first half. Buckeyes opposing starting QB's have yet to complete 50% of their passes against them so far this year.

Although Minnesota struggled mightily on this day, they did compete hard and some good things did happen. Their defense had five sacks (protecting the QB - an OSU problem area all season long). WR, Tutu Atwell had a good game with 237 all-purpose yards.

A Minnesota fumble recovery well into Buckeye territory in the 4th quarter gave their offense its last chance to score a TD and reduce the big lead. They drove down to the five-yard line. On 4th down and two yards to go for a first down, DE Matt La Vrar stopped Gopher backup QB Billy Cockerham at the four-yard line, one yard short of keeping the drive alive.

A starter at one of the DE spots, the talented, La Vrar (pride of Maumee Ohio), is one of the hardest working players on the team, so it was nice to see him make such an important play. He came into this game with 20 tackles for the year.

If OSU beats Illinois next Saturday, as expected, they will be playing the Michigan Wolverines for a share of the Big Ten title. The Bucks still have an outside shot at the National Championship, as they are now ranked 4th in the AP Top 25 Poll.

The game vs. Michigan is at Ann Arbor in the "Big House" on Saturday, November 22nd. Check out our "OSU vs. Michigan - Ten Years In Review" for a history of the rivalry, coming soon.
