1998 Ohio State Spring Game
Scarlet 20 - Gray 15

WR Reggie Germany's 25
yard acrobatic TD reception while lying on his back from third
string QB Austin Moherman with 2:57 left in the game was the
winning score in the Scarlet's (first string defense, second
string offense) mild upset over the Gray (second string defense,
first string offense) before a crowd of more than 41,000 in the
horseshoe.
PK Dan Stultz kicked 7
FG's while kicking for both teams. Five of Stultz's FG's came
for the Gray team who were held without a TD by the first string
defense, but still managed to put up 413 yards of total offense
and 23 first downs.
Starting QB Joe Germaine,
in limited action for the Gray team, went 9-14-1 INT for 101
yards. Backup QB Mark Garcia for the Gray had his second straignt
awful Spring Game connecting on only 10-25-3 INT's for 115 yards.
The only TD's in the game
were scored by the Scarlet team - Ken Yon Rambo on a 33 yard
pass from 4th string QB David Priestly (4-7-0-48 yards) and the
game-winner late in the final quarter from Austin Moherman (6-11-0-161
yards) to Reggie Germany.
As spring practice concludes
with the ending of this game, the top two positions on offense,
QB and Tailback with Germaine and Michael Wiley the starters,
are secure. Wiley carried the ball 10 times for 70 yards in limited
action for the Gray team.
The backups at both positions
will be in a battle for playing time with the third stringers.
The competition is close. At TB, Derek Combs (15-98 yards for
both squads) is the apparent leader in the race for second string
with powerful Joe Montgomery trying to close the gap. At QB,
Mark Garcia is in a battle with young talented Austin Moherman.
Several positions could
be a battle with a talented group of freshmen arriving for fall
practice in hopes of marking an impact early, as the Buckeyes
will go into the season highly ranked despite the disappointing
New Years night loss to Florida State.
