Ohio State 17 - Wisconsin 42

Numerous players went down with injuries in this game for Ohio State, including three LB’s - Na’il Diggs, Freshman Fred Pagac, Jr. (son of OSU defensive coordinator Fred Pagac, Sr.) who broke his leg and is out for the season and Jason Ott, as Wisconsin Pounded the Buckeyes 42-17. OSU had leads of 17-0 in the first half and 17-6 at half-time.

UW only led by one point, 18-17, entering the fourth quarter. The Badgers then poured it on, scoring 24 points in the quarter, all within the last 13:17 of the game. Wisconsin was just unstoppable, led by TB Ron Dayne (161 yards on 32 carries and four TD’s on runs of three and 11 yards in the third quarter, and runs of one and two yards in the fourth quarter) and slippery QB Brooks Bollinger, who was making his first career start. His numbers were good, but they don’t tell the whole story on how he moved the team at will at the end of the first half and in the second half. He was 15 for 27 with no INT’s and no TD’s for 167 yards, along with 78 yards rushing on 17 carries. Wisconsin converted 11 of 18 third down chances (to first downs) in the game under his direction.

Wisconsin’s scoring in their dominate 24 point fourth quarter went like this: PK Pisetsky booted a 27 yard field goal capping a 16 play, 73 yard drive; Ron Dayne bulled over from one yard out that finished a 10 play, 65 yard drive that put UW up 28-17; backup TB Eddie Faulkner scored a touchdown on a one yard plunge, capping a 6 play, 61 yard drive, highlighted by a 50 yard scamper by Ron Dayne to the OSU 3 yard line; after OSU returned the kickoff to their own 30, Buckeye QB Steve Bellasari then threw an INT that was returned 48 yards by UW’s Bobby Meyers to the Ohio St. two yard line, from there Dayne ran it into the end zone to shut the door on the Bucks for a final score of 42-17.

Undoubtedly, one of the worst second half performances by OSU in the decade of the 1990’s, 36 second half points baffled and confused Ohio State. The Season now looks in doubt, as the schedule is tough the rest of the way, starting this Saturday as the Purdue Boilermakers, led by QB Drew Brees, and their highflying aerial show, come to town looking to become the second straight team to Destroy Ohio State. The Bucks will have to improve and get players back and healthy from the injured list in order to compete with the teams on their brutal schedule.
