| The Michigan
Spartans bring, perhaps, the most inconsistent team in recent
college football history to Ohio Stadium this Saturday to try
and knock-off the No. 1 team in the nation. The Spartans excel in situations like this game where they have noting to loose and everything to gain. Last Season they beat a Penn State team that would have gone to an alliance bowl if they won. Not only did MSU win, they destroyed the Nittany Lions, 49-14, as both MSU tailbacks ran for over 200 yards each. The Spartans pounded Notre Dame this season, 45-23, after jumping out to a 42-0 half-time lead. Those victories are Michigan State's well-known peaks. The valleys are a different story. After the huge, unexpected win over PSU in the last game of the season in 1997, MSU played Washington in the Aloha Bowl and were demolished 51-23. The low points this year have been losses to Colorado State, after leading 16-0, and Minnesota, which trailed MSU, 18-10, late in the final quarter. On offense, Michigan State has fire-power and is led by future pro TB Sedrick Irvin (Dallas Cowboy Michael Irvin's cousin). Irvin was one of the TB's who ran for over 200 yards vs. Penn State last year. This season his stats are impressive with 858 yards rushing, six TD's, and 119 yards receiving. Another excellent performer on offense for MSU is WR Plaxico Burress (550 yards on 41 receptions and six touchdowns). On defense, the Spartans are led by De Jace Saylor (40 Tackles, four sacks, and six tackles-for loss) and safety Aric Morris (two INT's, six TFL, and 74 tackles). For OSU, look for more of the same record-breaking heroics from QB Joe Germaine and WR's David Boston and Dee Miller. Let's just hope any records broken by the Bucks are positive ones, instead of negative ones (For Ex.: 12 penalties against Indiana last week were a season high). MSU plays Ohio State for a half, then OSU pulls away in the second half with a somewhat comfortable win. Prediction: OSU 31-17. |
