Snow Bowl Trivia

On November 25, 1950, Ohio State and Michigan played in Columbus in a huge snow storm in one of the strangest games ever played in college football. Twenty-seven miles per hour winds and a ten degree temperature made it next to impossible to play. Not only were the fans stunned by one of the biggest blizzards to ever hit Columbus, but they might have even been more stunned that the game was played at all.

Who won the game, and by what score?
Answer: Michigan, 9 - 3.

By winning, this team accomplished these two important goals.
Answer: The Big Ten championship & a trip to the Rose Bowl.

Two brothers played on opposite sides in this game. Name both of them and the school for which they played.
Answer: Bob Momsen, All-American guard for the Buckeyes, and Tony Momsen, linebacker for the Wolverines.

Answer: Toledo.

These two siblings, although competing in different uniforms, did have one thing in common in this game. What was it?

  • A successful field goal kick
  • A blocked punt
  • A blocked field goal
  • An interception

Answer: A Blocked Punt. Michigan's Tony Momsen blocked a Vic Janowicz punt and fell on it in the end zone for a touch-down in the second quarter that turned out to be the game winning touchdown and the only touchdown of the game. Ohio State's Bob Momsen blocked a Chuck Ortmann punt and fell on it on the 8 yard line. That led to a 41 yard field goal by Vic Janowicz that had something to spare. An incredible accomplishment under those conditions.

Obviously, with the weather the way it was, both offenses would have a tremendous struggle on their hands. How many combined yards of total offense did these teams have?
Answer: 68 yards -- 41 for the Buckeyes and 27 for the Wolverines.

Answer: 6 - 8

Before the game, the grounds-crew had an almost impossible job of removing the frozen tarp from the field after OSU Athletic Director, Dick Larkins, decided that the game would go on. The blizzard made the task difficult, thus, more workers were needed to complete the job before the game could start. From where did the extra help come?
Answer: Volunteers, including Boy Scouts, came out of the stands to give the crew a hand.

Perhaps the game of football, in all eras, is taken a little too seriously. One has to wonder why this game could not have been postponed and played the following week? Playing a game in those conditions is not playing the game of football the way it should be played. Sure, football is to be played in all kinds of weather, but when all players have trouble with every aspect of the game, including identifying yard lines, goal posts, and sometimes even the opposing team, that goes far beyond being ridiculous. Both teams should be given the opportunity to play in better conditions with the chance to compete. Tell us what you think here or let us know on the ChatZone page.
